Is
the best known and widely used, as a germicide, of all
the Quaternaries Ammonium, is referred in almost all pharmacopeias
and correspond to the generic chemical notation of "ALKYL
DIMETHYL BENZYL AMMONIUM CHLORIDE".
The BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE, as generally mentioned, is
obtained, from high purity coconut oil fatty acid, following
strict specifications of the international pharmacopeia,
the alkyl radical representing the mix of C8 H17 up to
C18 H37.
In the coconut oil these fatty acids are present in a
Constant proportion, and the alkyl radical correspond
in the mix as containing approximately 67 % C12, 25 %
C14, 7% C16 e 1% DE C8 + C10 + C18. The Phenolic coefficient
for the Benzalkonium Chloride in pharmacopeias is STAPHILOCOCCUS
AUREOS, 275 and SALMONELA TYPHOSA, 250.
As new technology arrived, become possible distillate
and separate the coconut oil fatty acids and enrich the
mix with a higher percentage of C14, generally recognized
as having greater germicide action and hard water resistance.
